There’s something deeply satisfying about making your own skincare.
Melting, mixing, and pouring something you’ll actually use — it feels natural, pure, and intentional.
So today, we’re going to show you exactly how to make your own tallow balm from scratch.
But before you start filling your cart with ingredients, it’s worth knowing: if you want to make a balm that matches Teton Skincare’s quality, the price can add up quickly.
Sure, you can cut corners — use inexpensive jars, bulk oils, or low-grade tallow. But that’s not the kind of skincare we believe in. To make a balm that meets our standards, you’ll need the best ingredients — and they can be pricey.
Let’s take a look at what goes into a truly premium tallow balm.
🧴 What You’ll Need (If You Want to Match Teton Quality)
Here’s what you’ll need if you’re aiming for a balm with the same care and quality we use at Teton — not the bargain version.
-
50ml Infinity Miron Glass Jar – Protects your balm from light and extends shelf life. These jars are a must for high end tallow balm if you don't want degradation of your ingredients.
→ Infinity Jars 50ml Screw-Top — $17.99 -
100% Grass-Fed Beef Tallow – The nutrient-rich base, packed with vitamins A, D, E, and K.
→ Beef Tallow (14oz) — $20.56 -
Cold-Pressed, High-Polyphenol Olive Oil – Adds antioxidants and gives your balm a smoother feel.
→ Polyphenol Olive Oil (1L) — $27.42 -
Manuka Honey (UMF Certified) – A luxurious, natural humectant that supports skin hydration.
→ Manukora Manuka Honey (250g) — $78.00 - Optional: A few drops of high-quality essential oils (like lavender, chamomile, or frankincense) — $10–$20.
🧪 How to Make It
-
Melt the Tallow
In a double boiler, gently melt about 4 tablespoons of tallow until fully liquid.
(If you start with raw suet, you’ll first need to render it — which can take a couple hours.) -
Add Olive Oil
Stir in about one half tablespoon of olive oil while the tallow is still warm. -
Mix in Honey and Optional Oils
Remove the mixture from the heat. Let the mixture cool slightly, then add ½ teaspoon of Manuka honey and a few drops of essential oil if desired. Agitate the manuka honey until it dissolves in the mixture- a coffee frother (like this one) can help. -
Pour into Your Jar
Carefully pour the mixture into your clean Infinity Jar. Let it set at room temperature or in the refrigerator. -
Cool and Store
Once solid, seal and store in a cool, dark place. You’ve now made your own tallow balm!
💰 The Reality of High-Quality DIY
If you followed this recipe using the ingredients above, you’ve probably spent well over $140 — for one jar of balm.
Of course, you’ll have leftover tallow, honey, and olive oil, but that’s the point:
if you make a single high-quality jar, you can’t buy just enough of each ingredient. You have to purchase the full-size, premium materials — the same kind we use to make Teton's balms at scale.
Add in your time, shipping costs, and the cleanup after rendering or mixing, and you’ll quickly realize: it’s not the easy, cheap DIY it might seem on TikTok.
🏔️ Why We Do It For You
At Teton, we started out the same way — melting, mixing, testing, and perfecting.
We know how much care (and cost) goes into making something pure and effective.
That’s why we keep our formulas simple and our ingredients honest. We use grass-fed tallow, cold-pressed oils, high-end manuka honey and premium packaging — the same quality you see above — but our small-batch process allows us to offer it to you for less than it would cost to make a single jar yourself.
So go ahead — try making your own if you’re curious. It’s a rewarding experience.
But when you’re ready for the same quality without the $100+ shopping list (and kitchen cleanup), we’ve got you covered.
